Valentines Day 2011

Valentines Day has been and gone for another year. There has been lots of comment on facebook about it being commercial, expensive and a waste of time (amongst all the fun and pressie mentions). It can be all those things but it doesn’t have to be. As time goes on your relationship starts to take a back seat, especially when you have kids, and romance gets lost in the whirlwind that is your life.

To me, Valentines is an important yearly reminder to give each other time, some romance and have a bit of fun. It doesn’t mean you don’t do it the rest of the year, just that you make an effort on the day. We’ve been very hard up at times through the years and have had to be creative. We’ve made cards, written poems and letters, picked flowers from the garden, made heart biscuits, cakes, sweets, just gone for a walk along a beach. Sometimes we buy cards and presents, sometimes we don’t. We just try to be different each year.

This year I got gold hoop earrings. I was delighted. They’d been on my wish list for my birthday and Xmas. I don’t really do jewelery so these will be well used and loved.

As I’m not earning I had to be a little creative. The Ref has been complaining that his best (and gruntiest) screwdriver went missing when we shifted. Not a romantic gift, especially as I have an ulterior motive in getting several annoying jobs completed now the lost screwdriver is no longer an excuse!

Where I got creative was with the wrapping and the card. I made an Origami Chopstick Wrapper to put the screwdriver in.

It worked well as The Ref thought I was giving him a giant sucker (lollipop)! I also made an Origami Neck-tie Heart Card. They only took a few minutes to make but were really effective.

But the best part of our day was the time we shared in the evening. We’d been in the city on Saturday and had a nice meal at Cafe Cuba. A good thing we didn’t plan on the one decent cafe in our town. It was shut!! Monday being is usual day closed. So on Valentines day we went low key. It had been a really hot, humid day and The Ref wanted a shower and a walk to clear his head after work. We went for a walk and grabbed fish and chips. We ate them at a picnic table in the centre of town (there is a grass area through the main street with gardens, seats, war memorials and a playground), watching the world go by. We then headed home and watched a fav tv programme plus one we’d taped from last week while drinking bubbly with hibiscus flowers in it! The drink was appropriately red!! It was fun, different and more importantly, we enjoyed how we celebrated Valentines Day.
